Day-by-Day 7-Day Private Group Great Migration Safari Itinerary
01
Day 1: Arusha — Tarangire National Park — Karatu

After an early breakfast in Arusha, your private group guide loads the team into your exclusive 4x4 Land Cruiser for the scenic drive to Tarangire National Park. Tarangire is one of Africa’s great elephant parks — herds of 50–100 elephants drink along the Tarangire River beneath ancient baobab trees. Your guide tailors the day’s game drive to your group’s interests: photography spots, big cat tracking, or simply soaking up the landscape. Picnic lunch on the river bank. After an afternoon of wildlife viewing, continue to Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: Karatu area  |  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

02
Day 2: Karatu — Central Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, drive through the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area before entering Serengeti National Park at Naabi Hill Gate. The transition from highland forest to endless golden plains is one of the great safari moments. Wildlife sightings begin immediately — cheetahs on termite mounds, lion prides on kopjes, and herds of zebra and wildebeest stretching to the horizon. Arrive in the famous Seronera Valley for an afternoon game drive targeting resident big cats. Your private vehicle means the group decides where to linger and where to push on.

Accommodation: Central Serengeti area  |  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

03
Day 3: Central Serengeti — Northern Serengeti — Migration Territory

An early morning game drive through Seronera before driving north through the Serengeti — a journey of approximately 3 hours that is itself a game drive through changing landscapes. As you approach the Mara River ecosystem, the density of wildebeest and zebra increases dramatically during migration season. Your guide uses real-time wildlife movement information to position the group at the most productive crossing points. Even outside peak season, the northern Serengeti supports extraordinary predator concentrations following the migration herds year-round.

Accommodation: Northern Serengeti area  |  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

04
Day 4: Full Day Northern Serengeti — Mara River Crossings

A full day dedicated to the Great Migration — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth. Your group positions at the Mara River crossing points without any time pressure. Thousands of wildebeest and zebra gather at the bank, working up the courage to cross while giant Nile crocodiles wait below. When a crossing begins, the chaos and noise are overwhelming. Between river visits, explore the Lamai Wedge and Kogatende area for resident lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Bush picnic lunch beside the river. Sundowners at the camp’s river-view deck as the group shares the day’s highlights.

Accommodation: Northern Serengeti area  |  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

05
Day 5: Second Full Day Northern Serengeti — Migration & Big Cats

Two full days in Northern Serengeti is the defining advantage of this private group safari. While shared safaris must move on, your group has the flexibility to return to the same crossing points, follow specific herds, and wait for the perfect moment. Your guide tracks individual predator families and can redirect the day based on overnight wildlife movements. Explore different sections of the Mara River and surrounding open plains. The additional day dramatically increases your chances of witnessing multiple crossings and unforgettable predator encounters.

Accommodation: Northern Serengeti area  |  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

06
Day 6: Central Serengeti — Return South — Ngorongoro Area

After a final morning game drive in the Mara River region, begin the journey south through the endless Serengeti plains. The drive back through Central Serengeti is a game drive in itself, with opportunities to revisit the Seronera Valley lion prides and cheetah families. Exit the Serengeti at Naabi Hill Gate and drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the evening. Settle in and prepare for the final safari experience of the trip — a full-day descent into one of Africa’s most wildlife-rich calderas.

Accommodation: Ngorongoro area  |  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

07
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater — Big Five — Arusha

Collect breakfast boxes at 06:00 and descend the crater wall into the Ngorongoro Crater floor — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest Big Five destinations in Africa. The 260 km² caldera holds the highest density of predators on the continent. Search for the crater’s resident black rhinos, lion prides, elephant herds in Lerai Forest, leopards, and vast buffalo herds. Your group’s private vehicle can linger at every sighting. Bush picnic lunch at Ngoitoktok Springs. Ascend by 17:00 and drive back to Arusha or transfer directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for group departures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tanzania offers excellent wildlife viewing year-round. The dry season (June to October) is ideal as animals gather near water sources making game viewing easier. The short dry season (January to March) is great for bird watching and the calving season. For the Great Migration river crossings, plan for July to October in Northern Serengeti. Contact us to discuss the best time for your specific interests.

Yes, all our safari itineraries are fully customizable. We can adjust the number of days, parks visited, accommodation category (budget to luxury), add Zanzibar beach extension, Kilimanjaro trekking, cultural experiences, or any other special request. Simply contact us with your preferences and we will design your perfect Tanzania safari.

Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, olive green), a warm fleece or jacket for early morning drives, comfortable walking shoes, wide-brim hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, camera with extra batteries and memory cards, and any personal medications. A detailed packing list is provided upon booking confirmation.

A standard 4x4 Land Cruiser comfortably seats 6–7 guests in the back plus the driver-guide in front. For larger groups of 8–16, we use two vehicles travelling together, with two guides. This maintains the private experience while accommodating everyone. Larger groups of 17+ can also be arranged with a fleet of vehicles.

Group pricing is calculated as total vehicle cost divided by the number of guests. The more people sharing one vehicle, the lower the cost per person. We offer a dedicated group quotation service — contact us with your group size, travel dates, and preferred itinerary for a detailed per-person breakdown with full group savings illustrated.

Yes. Private group safaris are completely flexible. We can build rest stops, earlier returns, and optional activities into the schedule to accommodate different energy levels. If some group members want a full-day game drive while others prefer to relax at camp in the afternoon, your guide can manage a split schedule accordingly.
