Day-by-Day 6-Day Comfort Senior Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha — Tarangire National Park — Karatu
After a comfortable late breakfast at your Arusha hotel, depart at a relaxed pace for Tarangire National Park — approximately two hours from Arusha. Tarangire is one of Africa’s finest parks for elephant sightings, with giant herds gathering along the Tarangire River beneath ancient baobab trees. The wide, flat game drive tracks are ideal for senior travellers — no steep terrain, no long hikes, just excellent game viewing from the comfort of your vehicle. Picnic lunch in the park. After the afternoon drive, continue to a comfortable lodge in Karatu for dinner and an early night.
Accommodation: Karatu area | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Karatu — Central Serengeti National Park
After a comfortable breakfast, depart Karatu and drive through the scenic Ngorongoro Conservation Area to enter the Serengeti at Naabi Hill Gate. The transition from highland forest to endless savannah is one of Tanzania’s most beautiful drives, taken at a comfortable pace with rest stops along the way. Arrive in the famous Seronera Valley for a lodge lunch and an afternoon rest. Late-afternoon game drive at a leisurely pace through the Seronera area — one of Africa’s best year-round big cat territories. Early dinner and rest.
Accommodation: Central Serengeti area | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Full Day Central Serengeti — Comfortable Wildlife Viewing
A full day in the Serengeti at a relaxed senior-friendly pace. Morning drive along the Seronera River where lion prides rest in the shade, leopards drape from acacia branches, and cheetahs scan the open plains. Comfortable lodge lunch with a rest period in the heat of the midday. Afternoon drive to the Moru Kopjes for spectacular scenery and resident wildlife. The private vehicle ensures you set the pace — stop as long as you like at each sighting, rest when needed, and return to camp whenever comfortable.
Accommodation: Central Serengeti area | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Central Serengeti — Ngorongoro Conservation Area
A final comfortable morning game drive in the Serengeti before driving east through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road climbs into refreshing highland forest and cool montane air — a welcome change in temperature after the Serengeti plains. Arrive at your comfortable lodge perched on the Ngorongoro Crater rim with stunning views over the caldera. A gentle afternoon walk along the forest rim path (optional), followed by dinner with crater views as the sun fades into the highlands.
Accommodation: Ngorongoro area | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater — Big Five at a Leisurely Pace
Collect your breakfast box at 06:30 (a gentle start rather than the early 06:00 standard) and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at a comfortable pace. The 260 km² caldera holds the highest density of wildlife on the continent, including the rare black rhino, lion prides, vast elephant herds, buffalo, and hundreds of flamingos on the lake shore. A comfortable lodge or bush picnic lunch at Ngoitoktok Springs. Return up the crater wall by 15:00 for afternoon tea at the lodge.
Accommodation: Ngorongoro area | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6: Ngorongoro — Arusha & Departure
After a relaxed breakfast overlooking the crater, begin the comfortable return drive to Arusha through the Karatu highlands. Optional short stop at the Lake Manyara viewpoint for a final photograph over the Rift Valley. Arrive in Arusha for a farewell lunch at a comfortable restaurant. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or your Arusha hotel for a final overnight stay. End of a beautifully paced senior Tanzania safari.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tanzania offers excellent wildlife viewing year-round. The dry season (June to October) is ideal as animals gather near water sources making game viewing easier. The short dry season (January to March) is great for bird watching and the calving season. For the Great Migration river crossings, plan for July to October in Northern Serengeti. Contact us to discuss the best time for your specific interests.
Yes, all our safari itineraries are fully customizable. We can adjust the number of days, parks visited, accommodation category (budget to luxury), add Zanzibar beach extension, Kilimanjaro trekking, cultural experiences, or any other special request. Simply contact us with your preferences and we will design your perfect Tanzania safari.
Pack light, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, olive green), a warm fleece or jacket for early morning drives, comfortable walking shoes, wide-brim hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, camera with extra batteries and memory cards, and any personal medications. A detailed packing list is provided upon booking confirmation.
Arusha has several international-standard clinics and a flying doctor service. Ngorongoro and Serengeti have basic medical posts and radio communication for evacuation. We recommend comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation. Bring sufficient personal medications as pharmacies in the parks are limited. Your guide carries a first aid kit and emergency contacts at all times.
Absolutely. Senior safaris are designed to be entirely flexible. Game drives start when you are ready, rest stops happen as frequently as needed, and there is always the option to return to camp early or skip an afternoon drive for rest. Share your preferences at the start and your guide will customise each day accordingly.
Our vehicles are standard 4x4 Land Cruisers which require stepping up approximately 60 cm. If you have limited mobility, please let us know in advance — we can arrange a step stool and a guide who will assist. In the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti, most game viewing is done from the vehicle, so you spend minimal time walking. Hotel selection is also adjusted based on your mobility needs.
