Mastering the Art of Packing for Africa

Packing for Tanzania is a balancing act. You need to prepare for dusty savannah heat, freezing mountain summits, and tropical beach Humidity—often all in the same trip! This guide breaks down exactly what you need for a Wildlife Safari versus a Mountain Trek, ensuring you are comfortable, safe, and respectful of local customs.

Critical Tip: Weight Limits

Most domestic bush flights in Tanzania have a strict 15kg (33lbs) weight limit including hand luggage. We highly recommend using soft-sided duffel bags rather than hard-shell suitcases, as they fit better in safari vehicles and light aircraft.

Part 1: The Wildlife Safari Packing List

On safari, your focus should be on neutral colors, layers, and protection from the sun and insects.

  • Clothing & Colors

Wear earth tones (khaki, beige, olive, brown). Avoid bright colors (scares animals), white (gets dusty), and both blue and black (attracts tsetse flies).

    • 3-4 Moisture-wicking T-shirts & 2 Long-sleeved shirts (for sun/insect protection).
    • 1 Lightweight jacket or fleece for early morning game drives.
    • 2 Pairs of comfortable trousers (zip-offs are great) & 1 pair of shorts.
    • Wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap (to stop it blowing off in the wind).
  • Gear & Electronics
    • Binoculars: A must-have (8x42 is ideal for general viewing).
    • Camera: With a good zoom lens (200mm-400mm) and extra memory cards.
    • Power Bank: While vehicles have chargers, a personal bank is handy for lodges.
    • International Adapter: Type G (three-pin UK style).
  • Health & Personal Care
    • High SPF Sunscreen (the African sun is intense).
    • Insect repellent with at least 20-30% DEET.
    • Basic medical kit: Plasters, rehydration salts, antidiarrheals, and any personal meds.
    • Hand sanitizer and moisturizing eye drops (it gets very dusty).

Part 2: The Mountain Trekking Gear (Kilimanjaro/Meru)

Mountain packing is all about the Layering System. You will experience four seasons in one climb.

  • The Layering System
    • Base Layer: Synthetic or Merino wool moisture-wicking tops and bottoms. (NO Cotton).
    • Mid Layer: Fleece or soft-shell jacket for insulation.
    • Insulated Layer: A heavy-duty down jacket for summit night (-15°C).
    • Outer Shell: Waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX jacket and trousers.
  • Footwear & Trekking Gear
    • Hiking Boots: Waterproof, broken-in, with good ankle support.
    • Socks: Thick thermal socks for summit night and moisture-wicking liners.
    • Daypack: 25-35 liters for your daily essentials (water, snacks, camera).
    • Trekking Poles: Highly recommended to protect your knees during descent.
    • Sleeping Bag: Rated to at least -15°C (10°F or lower).
  • Summit Night Essentials
    • Headlamp: With extra batteries.
    • Sunglasses: Polarized, to prevent snow blindness on the upper slopes.
    • Water Hydration: 3-liter CamelBak/Bladder (insulated tube recommended).
    • Hand & Toe Warmers: Essential for the sub-zero summit push.
