Volcano Trekking

Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai Hike .

Ol Doinyo Lengai, which means "Mountain of God" in the Maasai language, is one of the most unique and challenging trekking destinations in Tanzania. Located in the Great Rift Valley near Lake Natron, it is the only active volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava—a cooler, highly fluid lava that turns white upon cooling.

Rising 2,962 meters (9,718 ft) above the desert floor, the hike is famous for its extreme steepness and the ethereal, lunar-like landscape of its crater. It is a physically demanding trek typically performed at night to avoid the intense heat of the Rift Valley.

Why Climb Ol Doinyo Lengai? .

For those seeking an adventure off the beaten path, Lengai offers an experience unlike any other mountain:

  • Active Crater Experience — Walk across the surreal white lava floor of the crater and see active steam vents (hornitos).
  • Sunrise over the Rift Valley — From the summit, watch the sun rise over the soda flats of Lake Natron with Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru visible on the horizon.
  • Cultural Significance — Experience a mountain held sacred by the Maasai people, often seeing them grazing cattle in the surrounding plains.
  • Extreme Challenge — With a 40-degree incline and loose volcanic ash, it is widely considered one of the steepest hikes in Africa.

The Hike Experience .

Due to the location and terrain, the Lengai hike follows a specific schedule:

  • Midnight Start — You'll be driven from your camp at Lake Natron to the base of the mountain to begin the ascent under the stars.
  • The Ascent (6-7 Hours) — A steady, steep climb through volcanic scree and rocky ridges. Headlamps and trekking poles are essential.
  • The Summit (Sunrise) — Reach the crater rim for sunrise. Explore the active crater floor before the morning winds pick up.
  • The Descent (3-4 Hours) — Coming down is often more challenging than going up due to the steep, slippery slopes.
  • Recovery at Lake Natron — Return to camp by late morning for a hot meal and a refreshing dip in the Engare Sero waterfalls.
