Climbing Mount Meru (4,562m) .
Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and an often-overlooked gem located within Arusha National Park. Standing at 4,562 meters (14,967 ft), it is a spectacular dormant stratovolcano that offers some of the most dramatic scenery in East Africa, including the famous "Ash Cone" and breathtaking views of its big brother, Mount Kilimanjaro.
Often used as a "warm-up" trek for Kilimanjaro due to its excellent acclimatization benefits, Mount Meru is a serious adventure in its own right. The trek takes you through diverse eco-zones, from lush rainforests filled with wildlife to high-altitude alpine deserts and craggy ridges.
Why Choose Mount Meru? .
While Kilimanjaro gets the glory, Meru offers a unique experience that many trekkers prefer:
- • Wildlife Encounters — Since the mountain is in a national park, you'll often see buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and monkeys on the lower slopes, accompanied by an armed ranger for safety.
- • Acclimatization — At over 4,500m, it is the perfect physical and mental preparation for those planning to tackle Uhuru Peak.
- • Unbeatable Views — The view of Kilimanjaro at sunrise from the summit of Meru is arguably the best in Tanzania.
- • Fewer Crowds — Enjoy a quieter, more intimate mountain experience compared to the busier routes on Kilimanjaro.
The Route: Momella Route .
Mount Meru has only one official route, starting at the Momella Gate. We offer this as a 3-day or 4-day trek (recommended for better success):
- • Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) — Hike through the forest, spotting wildlife and passing through the Fig Tree Arch.
- • Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570m) — A steeper climb as the forest thins out. Many trekkers add a short afternoon hike to Little Meru (3,820m).
- • Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (4,562m) — The summit push begins at midnight. You'll traverse the narrow, spectacular crater rim before reaching the peak. Descend back to Miriakamba or the park gate.
- • Day 4: Descent to Momella Gate — A final walk through the forest to complete your journey.
Essential Trekking Information .
- • Difficulty: Moderate to Hard. The final ridge to the summit is narrow and requires a good head for heights.
- • Best Time to Climb: June to February. December to February offers the clearest views of Kilimanjaro.
- • Accommodation: Stable wooden huts with bunk beds (Miriakamba and Saddle Huts).
- • Ranger Requirement: All groups must be accompanied by a national park ranger due to the proximity of wildlife.
